At the IFA fair in Berlin, the world's largest consumer electronics event, organizers of the fair say they are moving with the times as retail chains selling electronics replace specialist retailers and companies such as Philips, Samsung and LG no longer limit their products to electronic entertainment. Developers are also trying to use technology to make domestic appliances even more useful, such as a dryer that includes an ironing function or a washing machine that can be turned on via the Internet.

Personal details of more than 1 million customers of Royal Bank of Scotland, American Express and NatWest are found on a computer sold on auction site eBay. RBS said the information included historical data related to credit card applications and data from other banks, but would not disclose further details.The information was being held by archiving firm Graphic Data, which copies paperwork from some of Britain's biggest financial organisations and stores it digitally.

The Citrix Systems XenApp 5 product, formally called Presentation Server, is designed to allow IT pros to create virtual desktops. Citrix XenApp 5 can work with the Citrix XenDesktop virtualization suite or Citrix XenApp can work alone. Citrix XenApp 5 allows for the virtualization of Microsoft Windows and Office applications in an enterprise's virtual desktop infrastructure.

Updated: AMD and Broadcom announced a deal that will allow Broadcom to buy AMD’s Digital Television (DTV) business for $192.8 million. AMD first acquired the Digital Television division when it bought ATI in 2006, but the division had been underperforming and AMD shut the division down earlier this year to avoid additional financial losses. The deal is expected to strengthen Broadcom’s digital television offering and allow AMD to concentrate on its core processor business.

IBM and Hewlett-Packard topped Gartner’s survey of the worldwide server systems market for the second quarter of 2008. The IBM System z mainframe helped IBM top the Gartner list in terms of server revenues for the quarter. At the same time, shipments of HP’s ProLiant, Integrity and NonStop systems put HP ahead of Dell when it came to overall server shipments.

The Intel Classmate Notebook design is about to get an upgrade that will give the laptop touch-screen capabilities and tablet features. In addition, the new Classmate design will include the Intel Atom processor and an updated software stack meant for students in the classroom and their teachers. News organizations and the Computer & Communications Industry Association ask judge to unseal records in Advanced Micro Device's antitrust case against Intel. The New York Times, The Register, Dow Jones, The Washington Post, the Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press, and the Computer & Communications Industry Association all claim the original protective order is too broad and the public deserves more details on Advanced Micro Device's contention that Intel operates an illegal monopoly on microprocessors and used a questionable rebate program to coerce customers into avoiding using competitors' products. Intel has already been fined $25 million in South Korea for similar antitrust behavior by giving rebates to Samsung Electronics in return for not buying Advanced Micro Device's microprocessor chips.
